Designing Lace Triangles

Based on the book Knitting Lace Triangles, this workshop focuses on
designing a triangle by using any or all of the four lace stitches in the book.

The class includes:

1. reading lace on charts and on the needle
2. review of definitions
3. two splices to join any type of yarn
4. measuring wraps-per-inch to track knitting style
5. how to plan a design and look at stitch patterns
6. three provisional cast-ons
7. techniques for combining stitch patterns
8. alternatives for edging, including adding beads and picots
9. elastic cast-off, finishing and blocking

During the class, students can begin to chart, outline, and/or knit
their triangle. Information also is included on how triangles can be
turned into squares, how texture can be added to a design, and how stitch dictionaries can be used to continue the journey.

The class is appropriate for intermediate-level knitters who are
willing to read charts and explore lace patterns.

Introduction To The Basic Elements & Pattern Designs Of Orenburg Lace

Mouseprint, cat's paw, honeycomb... these are but three of the ten basic elements that form the basis of Orenburg's knitted lace, combinations of which result in the near-mystical pattern designs that evolve into Orenburg lace shawls and scarves. In this class, Galina will introduce students to the basic elements, border and corner preparation, grafting method(s)...all in preparation to render each student capable of knitting their own heir-loom shawl.

Charting Lace

Learn how to take your own designs or those you find in stitch libraries and create charts for knitting. We will go over the basics of charting using graph paper and pencil, and we will also learn about a variety of charting fonts, spredsheet tools, and software programs for Mac and Windows. If you have a favorite stitch written out in line-by-line instructions, bring it a long. You'll also need yarn and needles for swatching.
For intermediate lace knitters

Bias in Lace Knitting

Bias can be used in lace knitting in several ways. The best way to learn about biasing is to work up swatches of several different charts to see how the arrangements of yarn overs and decreases shapes the knitted fabric. We will examine a selection of lace pieces and learn how to use bias to create scallopped and zigzag edgings, slanted fabric, and textured lace.

Design Your Own Lace Borders

Do you love lace borders? Then learn how to design your own. In this class we'll go over the details of designing and charting sewn-on borders, knitted on borders, and borers that are picked up along the edge of a piece. We'll also discuss how borders can be used on sweaters, shawls, and home decor items.
For intermediate to advanced lace knitters

Estonian Triangular Shawls
Estonian lace knitters have several ways of shaping triangular shawls. In this class, we will discuss the variations and study, in depth, one interesting way to create a triangular shape, where decreases rule. We will make a miniature triangular shawl, easily translated to a human size, with unique patterns and special details.
For intermediate to advanced knitters.
Some experience with lace knitting and reading charts required.

Making a true Haapsalu RŠtik; a traditional shawl from Estonia
The tradition of knitting lace shawls began in Haapsalu, a town on the west coast of Estonia in the early 1800Õs. In this class we will study the history and the techniques involved in making shawls as they have been made in Haapsalu for almost 200 years. We will make a miniature rectangular shawl, easily translated to a human size, that incorporates unique stitch patterns and special ways of finishing.
For intermediate to advanced knitters.
Some experience with lace knitting and reading charts required.

Elements of Doily Knitting

Why are some knitters so passionate about doilies? It’s not because they need ornaments for their tables! They’ve discovered that doily knitting provides an intensely interesting and satisfying lace knitting experience. This introduction will cover the basics: selection of patterns and materials, a center start, reading charts, keeping track of your place, correcting simple mistakes, and finishing and blocking your work. Along the way you will learn skills that can improve other aspects if your knitting life.
Needed skills: students should already be able to knit in the round on double pointed needles (for example, socks or caps).

The Chart is Just the Start

From minor tweaks to major re-designs, there’s a lot you can improve or change in a published knitting pattern. The focus in this class will be on doily patterns, but the principles will be useful in other knitting situations. Some topics to be covered: direction of slant of decreases, how to handle double yarnovers and Big Holes, changing the number of repeats, converting a doily pattern to other uses, changing the size or shape of the doily.

Knitted Lace Edging

Who doesn’t enjoy beautiful linens with intricate lace trim? In this class students will knit a variety of knitted lace samples to put in a sampler for further reference. Discover how simple it is to embellish pillow slips, hankies and hand towels to give as treasured gifts or to pamper yourself with daily use. A wide variety of knitted lace trim patterns will be provided to awaken a passion for lovely knitted lace trims

Hem Stitching

Students will prepare a sampler using a variety of hemstitching techniques including the Simple Hemstitching, Ladder Hemstitching and Trellis Hemstitching. Other types of hems and finishing touches will be described with samples provided to encourage experimentation long after the class is over. Learn to prepare your fabrics for further embellishment in a manner that will “WOW” your friends. The book that will be used as a tutorial is “Finishing Touches for the Handweaver” by Virginia M. West, published by Interweave Press. Supplies will be provided at a nominal class fee.
