Charting Lace
Learn how to take your own designs or those you find in stitch libraries
and create charts for knitting. We will go over the basics of charting
using graph paper and pencil, and we will also learn about a variety
of charting fonts, spredsheet tools, and software programs for Mac and
Windows. If you have a favorite stitch written out in line-by-line instructions,
bring it a long. You'll also need yarn and needles for swatching.
For intermediate lace knitters
Three hour class
Bias in Lace Knitting
Bias can be used in lace knitting in several ways. The best way to
learn about biasing is to work up swatches of several different charts
to see how the arrangements of yarn overs and decreases shapes the knitted
fabric. We will examine a selection of lace pieces and learn how to
use bias to create scallopped and zigzag edgings, slanted fabric, and
textured lace.
For lace knitters of all skill levels
Three hour class
Design Your Own Lace Borders
Do you love lace borders? Then learn how to design your own. In this
class we'll go over the details of designing and charting sewn-on borders,
knitted on borders, and borers that are picked up along the edge of
a piece. We'll also discuss how borders can be used on sweaters, shawls,
and home decor items.

Elements of Doily Knitting
Why are some knitters so passionate about doilies? It’s not because
they need ornaments for their tables! They’ve discovered that
doily knitting provides an intensely interesting and satisfying lace
knitting experience. This introduction will cover the basics: selection
of patterns and materials, a center start, reading charts, keeping track
of your place, correcting simple mistakes, and finishing and blocking
your work. Along the way you will learn skills that can improve other
aspects if your knitting life.
Needed skills: students should already be able to knit in the round
on double pointed needles (for example, socks or caps).
Six hour class
The Chart is Just the Start
From minor tweaks to major re-designs, there’s a lot you can
improve or change in a published knitting pattern. The focus in this
class will be on doily patterns, but the principles will be useful in
other knitting situations. Some topics to be covered: direction of slant
of decreases, how to handle double yarnovers and Big Holes, changing
the number of repeats, converting a doily pattern to other uses, changing
the size or shape of the doily.
